About
My name is Ashley Hirzel; Owner of
Open Arms Wellness Center
For as long as I can remember, I've proudly considered myself a
horse girl
Growing up, a kind neighbor offered me horseback riding lessons on her lovely horses - I was hooked! Although never actually owning a horse, I have always found myself at a barn or on a trail. Always telling myself, one day.
I continue my riding lessons with OH Stables in Oregon, Ohio (which I highly recommend for anyone looking to start or further their knowledge) and it is there that I found my need to further my education in Equine Massage.
After finding the love for massage therapy and the benefits that it brings the human body. I knew that equine massage was something that I needed to add to Open Arms Wellness Center.
Now, after completing my Equine Massage Certification with NE Indiana Equine Massage & Rehab Center, I'm passionate about helping fellow horse enthusiasts and their equine partners.

Massage has been proven to assist in a horses overall health in
all stages of life.
Equine bodywork involves the systematic manual manipulation of a horse’s muscles and soft tissues to alleviate muscle tension and promote overall well-being.
For performance horses, studies show that massage may improve gait quality, flexibility, and success in competitive events. Studies of massage on performance horses have shown lowered stress hormones and reduced perception of back pain.
The benefits are endless.
Thermal Imaging
What is Infrared Thermal Imaging
A Miracle Time Saving Tool
Full Body Imaging $90
Include with treatment $50
Infrared Thermal Imaging, also known as IRT, is a miracle time saving adjunctive screening tool. Unlike other imaging options, IRT looks at the ENTIRE body of a horse and identifies areas of dysfunction, accurately pinpointing musculoskeletal inflammation, injury and exact location.
One quick full-body scan speeds up the diagnostic process, starts treatment earlier and resolves the problem sooner and more effectively.
IRT works by using a medically approved Infrared Thermal Imaging Camera which scans the entire body of a horse while quickly identifying health problems simply by seeing the invisible. This technology's high-resolution imaging measures the thermal temperature variations and changes emitted from a horse’s body and documents the entire physiology.
With pinpoint accuracy, injury and inflammation are easily detected due to the heat they emit, making it easy to see pain points in any horse.
Infrared Thermal Imaging (IRT) is a non-invasive, no touch, no radiation screening. Imaging is extremely affordable, quick and convenient for you and your horse. Horses are imaged right in the clients' barn without sedation, simply by standing while we do a scan with a special FDA cleared Infrared Thermal Imaging Camera. This imaging technology minimizes stress on the horse and enables a more efficient diagnosis, leading to a cost saving, fast resolution, and there are no harmful side-effects to be concerned about.
Thermal Imaging (IRT) is a unique imaging tool as it accurately identifies and maps the thermal patterns that radiate from a horse, making problems areas visible to us so that a treatment plan can begin and a faster resolution can occur. A full body scan can be completed in 30 minutes or less (with cooperation from the horse), allowing us to see current health issues along with early warning signs of brewing problems. IRT can detect stresses on a horse's body up to 3 weeks before visible signs appear. Not only is IRT a great tool for injury detection, but a wonderful monitoring tool for the equine athlete to keep them injury free.
IRT is being used not only in equine health, but on humans as well due to its excellent capability in pinpointing musculoskeletal issues, its accuracy, and its affordability.
IRT is currently being used worldwide in the medical community, for breast cancer detection, in hospitals, veterinary practices and more. Though still somewhat of a secret here in the USA, the FDA has approved IRT for medical and veterinary use as an accurate adjunctive imaging tool.
Use as the first line of injury detection; monitor treatment and the healing process; or use regularly to monitor and manage the well-being of a horse in training.

What is Elastic Kinesiology Taping?
Equine kinesiology, or the study of horses’ muscular movement, reveals surprising similarities between horse and human muscle action as well as similar problems with muscular tension.
Kinesiology taping is a taping technique designed for use in both therapeutic (injury rehabilitation) and working athletic situations. Kinesiology tape has been successfully used on humans for over 25 years. It gained significant popularity during the 2012 Summer Olympics. As seen on TV, many elite athletes use kinesiology tape such as Kerri Walsh, Venus Williams, Usain Bolt and Michael Johnson just to name a few.
During the last few years, the adhesive and taping techniques and patterns have been modified for use in the equine and
animal world. Just as human athletes can wear the tape when training for their sport, horses can also be ridden with the tape on when they are working. The tape can also be applied when the horse is recovering from an injury.
How Does Equi-Tape Elastic Kinesiology Tape For Horses Work? How is it Different From Other Tape or Wraps?
-
First, the tape stretches and is flexible. Therefore, it does not restrict range of motion, and at the same time, provides stability and support. The degree of stretch used when applying the tape and application pattern is of paramount importance in obtaining the desired results. Consequently, a thorough assessment of the horse’s needs and issues is critical. It is the foundation for successful tape application.
-
Second, the tape interacts and lifts the skin thereby decompressing the tissue and enabling increased blood flow and oxygenation. Additionally, the lifting affect forms small convolutions in the skin thus increasing interstitial space and allowing for a decrease in inflammation of affected areas and facilitation of lymph drainage. The lifting of the skin and tissue decompression also impacts how pain receptors respond to messages from the brain associated with pain and swelling. This, in turn, helps to facilitate both the healing process in the case of injury and the recovery process in the case of training. Standing wraps, fleece wraps and other types of first aid tape do not interact with the skin in this manner and do not offer the advantages of tissue decompression.
-
Third, the tape also helps prolong the benefits of manual therapies because the tape helps to increase the stretch of the collagen fibers in the muscles.

Benefits of Using Elastic Kinesiology Tape
-
Decompresses the tissue thereby enabling increased blood flow and
oxygenation which promotes and facilitates healing
-
Decreases muscle spams, tension, soreness and trigger points
-
Helps relax overused muscles
-
Decreases edema and swelling
-
Provides support to tendons, ligaments and joints in both athletic and injury rehab situations
-
Helps to improve muscle and joint mechanics
-
Tissue decompression helps provide pain relief by decreasing the pressure on the skin’s pain receptors and how the receptors respond to messages from the brain
-
Can be used in a preventative manner for horses that have weaknesses or are prone to injuries
-
Can help horses recover faster in athletic training situations
-
Can assist with horses that have chronic conditions such as lesions, kissing spine and chronic stiffness

Bringing the Body into Balance
The basic principle of balance is to realign the spine and help the horse achieve equal standing on all four feet. I like to see my patients with “four on the floor”. With pelvic imbalances or asymmetric shoulders and/or front feet, the spine often compensates and the horse adopts habitual stances. You’d be surprised how many horses have difficulty standing “square” for even 30 seconds.
This is why I start the Raindrop treatment with the essential oil Valor on the sacrum, withers, poll, sternum, and all four bulbs of the heels.
Valor balances the physical and electrical energies of the body and has been touted as a “chiropractor in a bottle”. The intention of guiding the body into the frequency of balance and harmony is the foundation of the treatment.
Take your time and feel the horse blend into your energy as you hold the sacrum and then the poll with Valor in your hands. Inhale and exhale deeply and encourage the horse to breathe.
Boosting the immune system
The next step involves applying a sequence of anti-viral, antimicrobial, anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory oils to the insides of the hind legs, stimulating the Spleen, Liver and Kidney meridians. These are the most influential acupuncture meridians of the immune system. This opens the channels for easy elimination of toxins and inflammatory residues.
Sometimes, especially if I am treating a respiratory condition, I apply the same six oils: Thyme, Oregano, Cypress, Birch, Basil and Peppermint. In these cases I apply the oils to the insides of the front legs as well – this will stimulate the Lung and Large Intestine meridians.
A Tibetan acupressure technique known as Vita Flex therapy is applied to the insides of the legs from the knees or hocks down to the coronet bands. This is also an excellent time to do fascial release work on the hocks, fetlocks or knees while the oils are on board. Remember, the horse must have enough life force to be able to assimilate all these oils and the movement of energy! Be certain to consult with your veterinarian or your horse health advocate before you decide to do a Raindrop treatment on a very sick horse.
The Raindrops
The third step involves moving up to the spine. Be sure to have something safe and stable to stand on. The same six oils as well as Marjoram are dropped like raindrops along the spine from 6” to 9” above, moving from the sacrum forward to the withers (thus the name “Raindrop Therapy”).
When you get really attuned to the oils, you can feel the differences in the vibration and energetics of each one. I strongly recommend you experience a raindrop treatment yourself before you give one to a horse. It is wonderful!
Before these oils are dropped on the spine, a mixing oil is applied generously over the spine to help diminish the heat of the Thyme and Oregano, and to help the oils travel down the hair shaft and into the skin. Mixing oils can be jojoba, grape seed, olive, almond, wheat germ, or coconut oil, or a combination thereof.
